Common Eye Conditions

Blepharitis

Blepharitis is a disease of the eyes characterized by the inflammation of the eyelids. Blepharitis symptoms include irritation, redness, and soreness of the eyelids

Blepharitis has two forms: one affecting the outer eyelid-called anterior blepharitis-and the other affecting the inner eyelid-posterior blepharitis. Both conditions exhibit similar symptoms, but have different causes. The culprit with anterior blepharitis is bacteria or dandruff, while posterior blepharitis is usually caused by a disfunction of the oil glands in the eyelid.

When left untreated, blepharitis can cause corneal erosion and eyelash loss, among other things. Blepharitis treatment varies depending on the cause of your particular condition, but you can expect a thorough cleaning of the eyes and eyelids, and the application of warm compresses to reduce swelling and irritation.
