Common Eye Conditions

Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding of the lens that affects how light filters into the eye. This condition is most easily compared to a camera lens; if it becomes partially obstructed, you are not able to take a clear and properly focused picture. The same principle applies to eye cataracts.

While no exact cause is known, there are many factors that are thought to increase your risk of getting cataracts including extended UV exposure, diabetes, and certain medications.

Vision problems caused by cataracts can be corrected through the use of eyeglasses or lenses, however, these lenses will not stop the actual growth of the cataract. The best and most common treatment is cataract removal. Over three million people undergo cataract surgery every year, with an extremely high success rate.
