Common Eye Conditions

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration of the eye is the degradation of the macula (part of the retina) over a period of years. It causes a slow loss of central vision, making it difficult to do things requiring sharp focus such as reading or driving. Macular degeneration signs and symptoms include fuzzy vision, straight lines appearing wavy, and shadowy areas in your central vision.

Macular degeneration is an age related condition that plagues senior citizens. It is a very common condition affecting some 1.75 million people aged 65 and older, and expected to become even more prevalent in the near future. It is the leading cause of blindness in people of advanced years.

While there is no cure or direct treatment for macular degeneration, there are many things that can be done to slow its progression and improve your vision including various drug therapies and antioxidant and vitamin supplements.
